The display was told to be an indestructible Sapphire one. This was a
dream come true for the Apple fans. But
Apple decided something else.
The analyst Tim Bajarin explained to the Time
magazine what the reasons were:
- The Sapphire is thicker than the glass. This would be a disadvantage for the thin smartphones nowadays. The glass can be thinner than a sheet of paper and then it can be chemically thickened.
- A sheet of Sapphire costs 10 times more than a sheet of paper. This means that the iPhone would have cost more with 100$. The price is already high so Apple was afraid that the sales wouldn’t have been at the same level.
- It seems that the Sapphire is more likely to break when it is dropped down. This would be a big problem. Even though the sapphire is better when it comes to scratches, it can’t prevent the formation of the cracks that could lead to breaking the display. The glass uses chemical substances that helps when cracks appears.
This is why the sapphire is used on iPhone camera and Apple
Watch – it is more unlikely to drop the watch instead of the smartphone.
